BACKGROUND

Marilyn and her husband Fred came to Rio Rancho from New York City in February 1990, bringing with them an established 15-year-old support services business, Abby West Office Services.  Since that time, Marilyn has marked her career with a staggering list of achievements, many of which took an inordinate amount of time to accomplish.  Regrettably, after 24 years of marriage, Fred passed away in September 2010.  Marilyn expresses care and concern for all of her constituents.  Even if their viewpoints on some issues differ from hers Marilyn has pledged to hear her constituents' viewpoints on issues before acting or voting on the city council.  Marilyn Salzman was elected to serve on the council in March 2004 and lost her race for re-election in April 2008.  Some of her accomplishments include:

1975 – 2007: Owner, Abby West Office Services, a support service in the outsourcing industry

1992 – 2004 Served in various capacities on board of River's Edge Homeowners' Association (board member, president, fundraising chair, newsletter editor/publisher)

1996 – 2004 and 2009 – present: Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Redcoat

1997 – 2001 Volunteer, Mayor's Ball

1998: Leadership Sandoval County graduate

1999:  Vision 2020 participant

1999 – 2004: Teen Court volunteer

1999 – Present: National American University, Advisory Board Member

1999:  City of Rio Rancho Bond Committee Member

1999 – 2012: Mary Kay Cosmetics, Consultant

2000 – 2004: Appointed Teen Court Advisory Board Member

2000: Appointed Leadership Sandoval County Advisory Board Member

2000 – 2004: Keep Rio Rancho Beautiful Advisory Board Member

2001: Appointed to Charter Review Committee

2001: Rio Rancho Hall of Honor recipient for outstanding volunteerism

2001: First graduating class, Rio Rancho University, Government 101

2002: Co-Chair, 2nd Annual Seats & Eats, sponsored by the Rio Rancho Education Foundation, raising $53,000 through corporate sponsorships and auctions.

2002: Appointed Honorary Commander, Kirtland AFB, 377th Air Base Wing

2003: Chairman, sponsorship committee for 3rd Annual Seats & Eats

2004 – 2008: Elected Councilor, District 6

2004 – 2008: Participant in New Mexico Municipal League ongoing training; Municipal Officials Leadership Institute (MOLI)

2004 – 2007: Mid Region Council of Governments (MRCOG) - Voting Member, Metropolitan Transportation Board

2005: Graduated Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) (10 Weeks)

2005 – 2006: Leadership Sandoval County Alumni, Executive Team Member (1998 graduate)

2005 -2008: President, Sandoval County CASA, Inc. Court Appointed Special Advocates for abused and neglected children in foster care

2006: Graduated Civilian Police Academy (10 weeks)

2006 – 2007: Board Member -- Haven House (for domestic violence victims)

2005 – 2006: Delegate to National League of Cities annual meeting, Charlotte, North Carolina and Reno, Nevada

2007: Helped organize Rio Rancho National Guard "Yellow Ribbon Ceremony," at the invitation of Commanding Officer Ali DiPour for National Guard deployment to Iraq

2007: Alternate delegate to Municipal League annual conference (Las Cruces)

2008 – Present: Member, NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), President 2010-12. Also serve on the NAMI New Mexico State Board

2011 – Present: Board Member, Storehouse West, a Rio Rancho-based food pantry and children’s’ clothes closet.
